Not so this year my friends, oh no, this year I have John. John is our eccentric retired neighbor who happens to obsess over all things home grown. The boys happened to tell him about our meager attempts at gardening when he decided to come and take over my garden. After roto-tilling for three straight days, and dumping (no pun intended) a load of cow manure over the surface, he declared my soil ready to support life. Needless to say I have learned A LOT from him. He has dedicated so much time to my garden, teaching me how and when to water and even installing boxes to house fresh basil and Italian parsley.
I feel like a proud mama when the tomato plants reach up for water and I don't mind admitting that I felt genuine sadness when we "lost" a basil starter. Sometimes I just wander out back just to look at them, sigh... Is that normal?
Ahhhhhhh, Beautiful...

I need to borrow John for a little while. Bring him and some of your tomatoe's up to Calgary.
That is so great!! I can't wait to have my own home in a state where things actually grow! What a blessing John is in your life. I would LOVE to have fresh herbs growing!
i am so envious! i don't have time for a garden this year!!! unpacking, two-two year olds and the like... no time!!!
It's good to know that there is something in the homemaking realm you don't know how to do yet, and that as you figure it out, you can help the rest of us! Keep us updated on the progress! Oh, and I just read the Twilight post too. We all scoff, then succomb to the dreamy vampire!
Good job, Karen. Most people miss the point of amending the soil if they want to plant a non-native plant (which, face it, most desireable garden plants are non-native). If you want to try a unique idea and approach to gardening, check out Square Foot gardening over at Frugal Dad .
