Tim really liked the name, it had to grow on me.
Here's the story:
Zeus happened to be observing the mortals below and decided that it was indeed time for another war as our numbers were too vast. He figured he'd throw a little mischief into the plans by having a golden apple fall from the heavens and land smack in the middle of a party the Gods and Goddesses were throwing.
Hera, Zeus' beautiful wife picked it up and read the inscription. "Kaliste" (Greek for "to the fairest") Well of course Hera thought it was for her but standing beside her was Athena, the goddess of War. Athena looked at the apple and exclaimed that it must be for her. Aphrodite, the goddess of love, also happened to be standing near where the apple fell and she too thought she should have claim to this inedible fruit. The three goddesses devised a solution to this dilemma, call on a human man to decide who should get the apple and therefore would forever be known as the fairest.
Paris was called upon. Hera offered to make Paris King of all men if he picked her, Athena offered to give him victory in any battle he fought, but cleverest of them all Aphrodite offered him the most beautiful woman in the world. Paris placed the golden apple in Aphrodites hand and asked for Helen of Troy. This of course started the Trojan war.
So when I think of Kalista I'm torn between thinking that A. She is the golden apple and she really is the fairest or B. She is going to start a long and ferocious war. hmmmm pondering that...
Here are the boys making golden apples for Kali's room.

That's very clever, Karen, and what a great one-liner she'll be able to sue the rest of her life (she'll love having it when she's a teenager (LOL!) ).
It's fun when you have a clear etymology for a name and you give kids a chance to learn them. Nicholas is proud of his Greek name (Nike Laos, which means "Victory of the People"). I've had to confess to Karina and Amber that I just thought their names would look cool in print; that's really the only reason they have them (well, that and they were names Christina and I could agree on :) ).
Cool story!!! She is a cutie. How neat to have that tied to her name. Wow boys are big....looks like fun!
she beautiful! i vote for a! emma was named after my maternal grandmother who died when i was 6. makenzie was named makenzie because korban didn't like addison, which is what i wanted to name her. i was pondering the other day, do the names we pick for our children somehow shape their personalities? hum!
Great background for the name. Wonder what others would pick. Maybe you should start a poll.
I think it's great the boys are making 'golden apples'
Have a great day!
Sorry I took so long to read this. The name is pretty on its own. With mythical background, it is awesome! --Aunt Amy
