I have been a huge U2 fan for as long as I can remember. I was given "The Unforgettable Fire" when I was 9 years old and haven't looked back since.
My older brother used to make me sit and listen to excerpts of songs then quiz me as to the title of not only the song but the album as well, a slap to the noggin was the reward for failure. At 11 I remember walking to school listening to the original "sweetest thing" on my yellow sony walkman, you remember those right? Driving to and from our cabin in British Columbia during my teenage years pondering over "The Joshua Tree" and "October".
Here is the band that created epic works like "Bad", "In the Name of Love", "Gloria", and of course the rebel song "Sunday Bloody Sunday." About 3 weeks before Riley was due I braved the masses and rocked it at one of their shows. I mean c'mon these guys were the ultimate, I worshipped these guys.
So all I can do is sit and shake my head in bewilderment at their latest attempt. I feel like a traitor, I really do, and I realize I am taking my life into my own hands when I admit this because the rest of my Irish family will surely seek it. I am compelled to say .....the jig is up gentlemen. It is time to step down, my Irish comrades. This hurts me more than than it does you..........
"SexyBoots" "Magnificent" ?!? Wha' the???????? I am so very confused, what are you trying to accomplish here my long lost brothers? Where have you gone too? Can you come back? I miss you, truly I do.
You were always with me, remember when we used to go jogging together, or how about the time you let me cry myself to sleep after that boy was mean to me? Do you remember walking the halls with me as I labored with all of my children? I know you were there when I gave a compilation of your best to my boyfriend who would later become my husband.
Come back!!!
Here's an idea, it's ok, how 'bout you just roam about the world singing songs of the good ole' days. Really, We'd all be very cool with that. I promise we will all turn a blind eye to your latest creation, we'll pretend it never happened.
Just come back.

I like U2 too but not like you do. I haven't heard their latest album. Sorry you are disappointed over the flop. jk I hope they step it up for ya girl.
Sad for me to say, and this may well be my own blasphemy, but nothing will match the high water mark that was "Boy", "October", and "War". That was U2 when they were raw, energetic and unchanged by huge success. To me *that* will be the zenith of U2. Each album after that grew to disappoint me more. I appreciate what Bono stands for, but musically, they lost the edge when they lost the hunger. Maybe it's because I'm a musician, but I tend to think the brilliance of a band is shown in their first three releases. After that, it's mostly derivative (there are notable exceptions, but most of the time, it's proven to be true).
I am just sort of giggling, picturing you in labor and listening to a song called "Sexy Boots!"
Karen, U2 is my ultimate favorite. I thought for a minute that I was the one writing the words I read. . . the mixed tapes, the "Sweetest Thing" (but mine was a bootleg copy of a copy) Anyway, I had no idea they put out something new and I'm going to check it out, but I have to say, their Auchtung Baby CD was a little weird, so I won't expect much more than that. I'll just go watch "Rattle and Hum Tour" on my Tivo for the millionth time until my kids realize that U2 was the greatest band of all time (or at least tell me it was, so I'll quit watching that movie over and over!)
